Brown Dwarf

with 9 comments

Long, long ago there was a magical time when Doctor Who wasn’t on the telly. It was called the Nineties and instead we had Red Dwarf, a science fiction programme that was actually good.

After a hiatus of nine years the original crew returned last night for the start of a new three-parter, Back To Earth. It is remarkable (and quite alarming) how easily they all slipped back into their roles but in the absence of any jokes and in the void caused by the removal of the laugh track it looks like a bunch of old men going through the motions. As Nancy Banks-Smith says “fighting dimension-migrating octopuses is a young man’s game.”

Hopefully. The Christmas special was quite enough for one decade. The missus is a fan though so we shall see.

And no, they aren’t really old men but they are two decades away from where they started. This shows and not in a good way.

  3. Well, I am watching it. She is not impressed with the veracity so far: “That clearly isn’t a London bus!”

  5. Evans wasn’t actually that painful. Just everything else.

  8. I had some mad urge to watch this on iPlayer – voluntary exposure to Who, no less. It was awful, Rusty doing his usual ‘no new ideas’ thing, except without any connective plot tissue, as Martin says. Dear oh dear.
