Government policy is often questionable but reporting of policy is often so bad that it makes it impossible to have a sensible debate. And as for the people who read that reporting…
It was a real shame to see places like Wired just picking up the Sunday Express report verbatim and that so many commenters on MetaFilter just mindlessly lapped it up. As I mentioned, this is why Doctorow winds me up so much, the lack of basic critical thought.
Oh God, I’ve just read the comments on the Wired story. I know I shouldn’t be amazed at how stupid people on the internet are but still. Although I did like this one:

One of my jobs is to answer Ministerial correspondence, where it intersects with what we do, and some of the stuff that gets asked doesn’t stand up to a moment’s thought. People seem to lack intuition about what technology can realistically be used for.
